Never added it up, but lost almost everything this past October due to my not having a backup power supply. No power for 5 days the tanks temp dropped too 50 degrees.

That has been remedied. :)

Did you kill something really nice and just want us to make you feel better about your loss?

haha, ok well, i've probably lost a lot more than $1000 w/fish and corals put together.

if you have only lost 1k then you haven't had tanks long enough. the hurricanes 3 years ago solved all my tank problems for a bit. 14 days and then 12 days without power in 90 degree days.

My loss was very high the first 12 months. Now, less than 5% loss on corals and virtually no loss on fish.

Whats the value of loss from purchasing your first set up..then the loss on sale when you upgraded (or if its just in your cellar)...then the cost of loss when you upgraded again.

Is there a cheap hobby?

I haven't lost any fish since I began the hobby, outside of the one sandsifter that jumped out. Unfortunately I had some issues with my corals lately as I am still out of town and have had someone else looking after it, not looking forward to getting back and assessing the damage.

Fortunately, My nano wont allow for some of the more expensive livestock out there, that and I tried to stay with easier corals and fish so far...

I've lost only ~$80 in livestock. Here's the story if anyone is interested...
Lost all my fish in less than a week after ~3 months of no problems (missed a feeding and a large hermit decided that my "trained" mandarin would be a good meal alternative, then one of the main pumps failed cutting off the RDSB and nitrates spiked off the charts, stressing the two clowns I had to death. Now been running inverts only for ~2 months. As for corals I only lost a few mushrooms when their frag rock was knocked upside down by a hermit... (was at the lake that weekend)

Will definitely not be buying hermits when I get a larger tank.

Sorry for the long winded post...

I once pined for the death of a damsel fish so I wouldn't have to catch it. The day he died is one of my highlights of 2006. Man I need a life.

Its not really a loss if you learned how to keep it from happening again.
