View Full Version : The first (possibly) annual STRS frag excursion…

nwrogers
07/16/2007, 01:25 PM
Since it is summer time and any interest in a frag swaps is limited to the hardcore addicted reefers like Vince and I we were thinking of doing something a little different. Instead of a frag swap we are planning on having a frag excursion! The idea is that we will get (borrow) a bus (aka a minivan :) ) that seats 7 people and drive to a far away place for coral! Anyone who plans on going will just be asked to chip in for gas. The location we have chosen for this frag excursion is Pacific East Aquaculture in Mardela Springs, MD. I have spoke with Beth from Pacific East and we need to give them a notice at least one week in advance. They will be offering us 15 frags for $99 YOUR PICK of hundreds of SPS, LPS, and other coral frags grown in their greenhouse. We are planning on meeting at my house at 7:05am and leaving at 7:15am and returning that night around 9pm. That will give us time to spend several hours shopping at their facility and time to stop for fast-food once on the way up and once on the way back. You may want to bring some snacks. The trip is planned for Saturday August, 11th. This will be a day trip and seats may be reserved by PMing me. If you have any questions please post here or send me a PM. Space is limited so decide soon!

Very cool idea. I have to see whats going on but I'm hoping i can go. Nate, is their someone your in contact whom we can ask for a zoo donation in addition to what we purchase personally? Espoecially for fish and/or inverts including clams. Thats a great price to begin with and i would be willing to donate some of what i purchase to the zoo regardless.

I’m sure it wouldn't hurt to ask. The lady I spoke with today is Beth: 1-877-887-5224

She seemed very nice and if we get a full van of people going down I am sure we will buy over $1000 of coral between all of us. I would think they would consider giving us some stuff for the zoo tank. I don't have any special contact or friend there. I just called today for the first time and asked if we could all come down and score that 15 for $99 deal and she said yes they just need a one or more week notice...

OK so I wanted to put together a list of who we have going as of right now. If you are not in the top 7 don’t worry because I am guessing a few of the maybes will end up not being able to make it and if we get enough interest we will just take a second van/car. Here is what I have so far…

1) Nate - nwrogers (definite)
2) Vince – fatrip (definite)
3) Dave – DaveVG (maybe)
4) Mike – Swalla (maybe)
5) Jerry – drbronx (maybe)
6) Jim – St.james of reefdom (definite)
7) Paula – razzmatazz (maybe)
8) Geo – Blugobi (definite)

If I marked you down wrong let me know. Also there is no pressure or obligation to spend lots of money there. You are welcome to spend as much or as little as you like. If you think 15 corals is too many or $99 bucks is too much I am sure there would be people that would be willing to split packs 50/50 or whatever you have money/space for. So no pressure at all, this should be fun!

Should we get a uhaul to bring all of the frags back in?

Sure no problem! It looks like right now we have enough to fill one van and one car. If we get a few more people we can surely justify taking two vans. Does anyone else want to volunteer to drive?

Don’t worry Vince we won’t make anyone sit on the roof. If we need to we will just take two vehicles. How does this look…

1) Vince – fatrip (definite)
2) Dave – DaveVG (maybe)

Sounds good. If we have 2 vans we will have plenty of room for everyone!

I also wanted to let everyone know that I spoke with Beth and reserved August 11th for our trip to Pacific East! If we are able to bring a minimum of ten people they will be willing to give us a personalized tour of their facility and lunch will be on them! They will provide free pizza and soft drinks. In addition to the 15 frags for $99 I mentioned before they have offered us the following discounts (apparently this is their summertime special for reef clubs :D )

THE SPECIAL DISCOUNTS (We must have a minimum of 10 club members to qualify for these)

CORALS AND FISH
Club members get 40% off regularly priced individual corals and fish.

We also offer many in-store special package prices that are not included in this discount. For example, we offer your pick frags 15 for $99 and many soft and LPS coral colonies at $69 each or buy 4 for $59 ea or buy 6 for $49 each and get a 7th FREE, these packages do not qualify for the 40% discount. Discount applies only to individual regularly priced corals and fish, we always have a large selection of corals that would qualify for the discount.

LIVE ROCK
Take 50 cents a pound off our regular in-store prices.

INVERTS
Take 10% off our regular in-store prices for all inverts

This is shaping up to be a pretty cool trip! Hopefully we can get ten people to go but either way it will be really fun. Here is who we have so far…

1) Vince – fatrip
2) Jerry – drbronx
3) Jim – St.james of reefdom
4) Paula – razzmatazz
5) Nate - nwrogers
6) Geo – Blugobi
7) Alison - puffer_heaven
8) Mike – Swalla (maybe)
9) Dave – DaveVG (maybe)
10) Paul – fish1219 (maybe)

One last thing Beth told me that people can check their website for things they want the week of our trip and I can call in and have them held of us. They will hold them for 3 days, the only catch is if you have something held it won’t qualify for the 40% discount. So you may want to just cross your fingers and wait. Don’t forget your foam coolers :)

Can we rent a large van to accommodate all of us or are we going to have a caravan of vehicles? This should be very cool.

nwrogers
07/19/2007, 10:40 AM
Renting a van will raise the cost and at least for me I would much rather spend every last dollar on coral not on a van rental. I am not completely against it but being that I am pretty cheap with everything but my tank I would have to vote for the minivans. We should all be able to fit everyone in the two minivans I think.

Here is an updated list, demanded by Vince via PM…

1) Dave – DaveVG
2) Jerry – drbronx
3) Jim – St.james of reefdom
4) Paula – razzmatazz
5) Nate - nwrogers
6) Geo – Blugobi
7) Alison - puffer_heaven
8) Ryan - RyanM
9) Vince – fatrip (hanging onto a rope tied to the back of the van wearing rollerblades and a teal sweatsuit)
10) Mike – Swalla (maybe)
11) Paul – fish1219 (maybe)
12) John - Zanclus (maybe)

That gives us 9 people that definitely plan on going so things are looking good for our personalized tour and free pizza!

fatrip
07/19/2007, 10:40 AM
it is only going to be 2 vehicles and it would cost alot more to rent a van because you have to pay for the van and the miles you put on the van AKA 600miles and forthe gas....

Bump....just over two weeks to go.....who is riding with who? I'm driving my Van and St.james is riding with me (shotgun :) ) and I still have room for 4 comfortably, plus coolers. I figure we split the gas based on the amout of passengers. Looks like about 5.5 hour drive per mapquest and about 315miles...based roughly on $3.00 gallon for gas and the milage on my van, were looking at about $80.00 for gas or $15.00 per person if I have 6 passengers including me. Sound fair?

Well I just got a phone call from Beth at Pacific East and she would like us to reschedule for Saturday the 18th. Dr. Mac just found out he has to go out of town for something on the 11th so we will no longer be able to go down that day. Beth said they are expecting a large shipment on Wednesday the 15th so if we can switch it will work out better for us anyway. Post here if you can still go on the 18th or send me a PM. As much as I would love to see there operation lets face it I’m going for the corals and prices. If this does fall threw maybe we could pick some stores up north to visit. Time for an update…

I called Beth at Pacific East and told her changing the date is out of the question since almost no one could make it the following weekend. She spoke with Dr. Mac and they said we could come down on the 11th if we wanted too. She did say that the selection will not be as good as the week following the 11th but it should be ok, whatever ok means :) She also said that even though Dr. Mac won’t be there to give us a tour that another employee would be able to show us around. I asked if we could still get the discounts and she said yes. Then I asked about the 15 for $99 deal and she said we could get that but she wanted to tell me not to expect the colors on those corals to be very vibrant. She gave me this link with a photo of what to expect of the corals in the 15 for $99 deal…

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1176897

They look like mostly brown outs but I would imagine that most of them would color up over time. I am sure patience will be required since they look pretty brown. So then I asked her for more detail on the 40% off deal. Before I continue I should say that the reason I was asking all of these questions is because people have either asked me or they were things I read about and wanted to see if the claims were accurate. The way the 40% off deal works is you can only get 40% off if the coral isn’t already discounted. If the coral is discounted 10% or 20% you CANNOT get 40% off. So I took a look at their site and I noticed that it looks like 90% of the corals are already marked down so there will be very few corals that would qualify for the 40% off :( There is a small chance I am misunderstanding this but I am almost sure I am right on this.

http://www.pacificeastaquaculture.com/ShowProductCategory.aspx?CategoryId=2

A few of the reviews I have read say that it is really nice there but it may not worth the drive from upstate NY. So I have to admit I am second guessing this 6 hour drive :(

So I will mention an option that Beth mentioned to me and see what everyone thinks about this…

She said since they won’t be getting in a big shipment until after the 11th maybe we would like to wait and do a group order instead. She said that she would let me know when they posted all of the new stuff on the site and then we all could start placing orders over the internet. Each of us would place our own orders and should would collect them all up and set everything aside for us. Then she could ship them out for Saturday delivery and we could all get together and have a remote Pacific East party. The shipping costs would be less than the cost of gas to get down there and they would individually pack and label each persons box separately so to avoid confusion. I mentioned that sounds good but what about the discount since for most of us that is the driving factor. She said that Dr. Mac said that any corals not already discounted he would discount for us after we place the order. The amount he will discount them depends on how much we order so he can’t guarantee 40% but it will be something. I told her I will run this by everyone and see what they think.

So what do you think? Should we go down on the 11th or do the group order? I am open to anything but I just wanted to give you the full scoop. Also one person mentioned possibly going somewhere else on the 11th. That would be an option for me as well. We have no commitment to go to Pacific East since I am still working the details out with Beth. If people wanted to do a tour of the reef stores in Rochester instead on the 11th we could do that instead. I know a few of us haven’t been up there before and since I have been I can say for sure that is worth the drive. The prices aren’t as good as Pacific East but you may find something you like. I don’t know, what does everyone think?

6 hour drive to pick up a bunch of browned out corals doesnt spark my interest all that much. I would be into going up to Rochester or waiting till the 18th.

yea i think i am with ryan especialy since almost all of there corals are on sale so no 40% off. i'd rather take a tour of a facility up north.

I can't make the trip after the 11th , to much work and it wouldn't make sense to me other than to get away to go to Rochester since we can't get the discount or the frag deal at Rochester that Dr Mac was offering. Oh well..
Maybe we should make the Maryland trip at a later date.

First off thanks Nate for all the effert you put into getting this trip to work. Guess it wasen't ment to be. I would be up for going up north if there stores with lots of corals and good deals. I think i'm in for the frag meet. Whos all going to that?

Yes it is kind of a bummer. I had good intentions and I thought this might be a cool trip but if they aren’t going to have much in stock it’s just not worth the drive. Especially since there is going to be a frag meet in at S Helinski’s on the 18th. I can go up there and pick up a bunch of frags that are not brown and hit the reef shops in Rochester and Buffalo on the way. That is only 3.5 hours of driving too. I would definitely be interested in going to Pacific East but I would like to go on a weekend when they had just got a shipment in :( Oh well, we tried…

Ditto St. james. Great intentions and great try. There will be other opportunities for a group trip. I was hoping to by some fish for the zoo. Looks like Foster Smith time. Anybody know how Rochester LFS fish prices compare. I'd be up for a drive Sat. if prices were comparable.

BTW, I'll be heading to the zoo tomorrow night at about 6:30 if anyone wants to meet.

Hey Folks,
Sorry we could not work out a good time for you to come down.

We always have tons of corals available, including this weekend, just got in several shipments today and expecting more Tuesday, so we do always have lots of nice colorful corals. Now, on the low priced frag deal, those might not be the brightest colors at that price, however you can pick from hundreds and there are many very nice pieces that don't always make it in one particular mail order order. I think where Beth may have confused the situation is that I am expecting some more Australian corals and 250 Maricultured corals from Bali, Tonga, and Vanuatu within the next couple of weeks and at that time we will have a wider selection that usual and I think she was suggesting that if the club might be able to find another later date we will have even more stock that usual.

You are more than welcome to come in this Saturday, I will not be in on that one day, but we will have a good selection of corals--all types of LPS, soft, and SPS corals---colonies and frags---not everything is posted on the site at any given moment. If you can find another date in 2-3 weeks then we will have an exceptionally huge selection.

Look forward to seeing you soon. If you wish instead to do a group buy at some time I will gladly work with you to do some type of discount.

For all the trouble we should still get the discount no mater how many show up.

Being that fatrip (Vince) thought what I sad in my last post was being harsh on Pacific East Aquaculture I figured I better state that that was my opinion only and I was by no means speaking on behalf of anyone here or STRS. I don’t know about anyone else here but I have to plan my time. I planed that day for this trip. And yes it was kind of a hassle for me. I guess the good thing is I have that day off being that I have no plans now lol.
