Hi. This small red thing appeared in my tank a few days ago, and has started to grow. I think it's cool looking, but is it a bad algae that I should remove, or good macro algae? You may not be able to tell from the photo, but whatever it is, it's standing up on the rock and flowing in the current like a coral would do.
Thanks! Pam

Cyano doesn't usually stand up like that. Is it covering other rocks? Any signs of spreading?

It's only on this one rock...and only what you see in the picture. It was actually just a tiny nub for a long time, and just started opening and growing. It's probably about 1/2 the size of a dime.
Thanks! Pam

the algae appears to be a Halymenia sp.. usually harmless, slowish growing, and would probably good in a sump to export nutrients.

Thanks Paintbug. I think you're right. I looked up Halymenia after reading your reply and the pictures look the same as what's in my tank. I found that other names for Halymenia may be Red Nori, Dragon's Breath and Dragon's Tong. Good to know that it's beneficial. Thanks! Pam

Definetly not Cyano. That is macro-algae, let it grow.
