I have a 58 gallon reef tank that has an outbreak of macroalgae. Is there a good reef safe fish that will macroalgae? I have tried a lawnmower blenny, but he does not touch the stuff.

I would try an urchin at your size tank. Maybe a foxface, but I am not sure if the size of tank is still ok. 55 gal is on the small side for a tang which would be the real help for you.

Your hand is probably the best method of getting rid of most macro algaes. ;)

I agree but some of them get a good hold on the rocks and it is a constant workout. If you have a cleaner in the tank you can just sit back and relax.

Its feather caulerpa. I have tried to pull as much as I can off by hand, but within a couple of weeks it goes crazy.

I know some people are gonna freak out about this, but try a small yellow tang. Ask your LFS if you can return it for credit when it gets to big. My tang loves to eat caulerpa. I grow it in my fuge for him. Every couple of days I harvest a small hand full and throw it in the display, and within 20 minutes its all gone. Just a thought. HTH. Good luck.

intesad of getting a algae eating fish you need to get rid of...get a foxface or a scribbled rabbitfish.

the scribbled rabbitfish are gorgeous IMO and would be ok in your size tank.

When I kept dwarf angels, my rockwork was completely and utterly algae free - no microalgae, no macro, only a little coralline. I didn't realize how much work they were doing until I sold them (when we upgraded our tank). Now that I have no dwarf angels, various macros (Halimeda, caulerpas, valonia, botryocladia (sp?), and Sargassum) have popped up all over the place. I have a bicolour blenny and a yellow tang, they don't bother it at all. I also have a pincushion urchin and some HUGE Mexican turbo snails - the only thing that ever mowed this stuff down, to the point where I didn't even realize it was there, were Centropyge angels. Not sure if you want to go that route, since they're not always 'reef safe', but it might help. Otherwise, I'd just harvest it by hand :)
