Bought some new live rock from my local store a couple of days back which has a few things growing on it, anyone got any idea what it is?

Didnt get anything like this on my last lot of LR so i'm hoping theres some nice critters there :)

One last thing which may sound like a wierd problem - dog hair! I have 2 dogs and every day when I check my tank theres hair floating about which must come in the top of the tank even when the lid is closed - not sure if it will do any harm but it looks unsightly, anyone got any ideas?

Cheers Guys
Chris.

As for the aptaisia - its only tiny and it hasnt done much is it really that bad?

Also saw this a little while ago and managed a snapshot (my goby was eyeing it suspiciously), some type of crab - its furry? :

Should I get rid of that bubble algae and aptaisia because it seems very small and untroublesome? :)

One last thing - just checked my tank with the light off and there are thousands of tiny white bugs all over the place - good? bad?

Chris.

Yes you WILL want to get rid of the algae and the aptaisia as they will both become a HUGE problem. I can't really tell what the crab is but in general most are bad. The tiny bugs are just pods and are perfectly fine.

Ok the algae has gone unless there some I missed - which there probably is. Aptaisia seems to have vanished (for now) with the help of something acidic from the cupboard. Ho-hum, is there anything good in live rock because everything i've got in mine so far seems to be bad in some way :(

Good job on ridding the algae and aiptaisia. Keep a lookout in case they come back and get them as soon as you see them. There are a lot of other good creatures in LR that you may not see such as copepods (the bugs), feather dusters, bristleworms (you'll prolly have a zillion of these). Good luck!

The unidentified object on your rock could be a number of things. Right now, it looks like its suffering from a lack of light and being squished around. Until it forms a bit more, we can't be certain of what it is. Looks like possibly a mushroom or anenome. At any rate, it won't be harmful in the condition its in. If it recovers, you'll have a better indication of what it could be.

The crab looks like it's possibly a gorilla crab. If it has pointed claws with black tips, than that is most likely what it is. Generally, these are not reef safe and should be moved to the refugium if you have one.

I wouldn't put a crab in a refugium, personally, because they will prey on small animals that I'd prefer make it to the tank. I'd catch and euthanize the animal. It might not be a true crab, though, so you could try posting a few shots if you manage to catch it.

No idea on what's on the rock, but I did see a few banded arms of a micro brittle star sticking out of a hole in the rock - on the mid left side. I have tons of those things.

Now I learn i've gotta somehow get rid of my crabs - I think the gorilla crab id is right i've looked at some pics online and they look similar although mine is covered in some sort of algae or something. Ive got 2 crabs in total and theyre both pretty small I enjoy watching them come out when the lights are off - god knows how im gonna catch them :/
