nice, i am wondering if if should do a 10 or 20L, the only difference would be an extra $200 on the lighting prolly. i am going to keep a pair of multibanded pipefish in their also. one question though, can i cycle the tank with tap water then start adding corals or do i have to get 20 gallons of RO/DI?

get ro/di you dont know whats in tap, and while it may not effect anything now, it may in the future.

I am currently setting up a 20g prop tank aswell. It was cycled with live rock and a damsel with natural sea water. You could also use ro/di water, distilled water from grocery store, or just buy pre-mixed salt water from you LFS.
I would definetly go with a 20g long. My setup is as follows;
20g long used $10
New penguin 150 filter $10
Jagar 250w heater $18 <the smaller heaters are only a couple dollars difference in price so I just got the big one. :D
Maxi jet 900 $12
I have not purchased the light yet but am pushing towards a current-usa 30" 2x65w fixture on ebay new for $110. I am not sure what you are going to propagate but all softies and lps will do great under pc's. I have personally experienced the best growth of my zoanthids under pc's. Just my .02
I hope that helps. I will post up pictures when it is up and running.
Thanks

I have a 20G long tank tied into my sump/fuge that works great. I run two 24" T5 lights w SLR reflectors and normal ballasts. The system works great but grows a little algae.

I'd go with the 20L, but you dont want to use distilled water because they distill it in copper tanks so it might kill your corals.
