My first post!

I am thinking about upgrading from a 33 gallon to a 120. I am planning to put the 120 in the eat-in area of my kitchen. I am wondering if its safe to keep it so close to the kitchen since oil and other evaporates from cooking may end up in the tank?

Other than that. Will water and LR from the 33 be enough to seed the tank or will I have to wait through the long cycling process? I plan to get a completely new sand bed...

Thanks for any suggestions/advice! I'm sure I'll have more questions as I continue this project.

Oils and other "gunk" from the kitchen is fine in the quantities you're talking about. They're organics and your skimmer will take them right out of the water. Cleaning will be slighting more work, but not a measureable amount. What you want to avoid with your tank are substances that build up rather than evaporate away or can be skimmed out. A kitchen shouldn't be a problem. I'd have a nice cannopy for it though to keep accidents from happening.

Live rock from your 33 will be plenty to seed your tank. I'd go with the rest base rock, but then I've enjoyed watching my base rock develop over time. You should get upwards to 150-200 lbs of rock in your 120. Base rock can save you a bunch of money and you don't get any of the problems that new live rock can bring. Regardless of what you do, you should wait through the cycle process. Bacteria need time to colonize all their new surfaces.

Consider getting your tank drilled so that all that plumbing isn't visible. I wish I had done that with my tank in the living room. My next tank certainly will.

welcome to RC. There will be no problems. I suggest that you make a canopy and not leave the top open.

Unless you have a giant wok running 24/7, cooking shouldn't be a problem. I have had a Nano on the kitchen counter next to the sink for ~2 years. I worry about soap, but it hasn't been a problem. R

Tanks tend to make alot of noise and on occassion don't smell that great .. something to consider when your placing your tank.

I would say its ok to have in a kitchen just as long as no one such as children want to feed the fish if you get my drift...
