View Full Version : Bad Flow Restrictor?
Hi Jim.
Thanks for the quick shipment of the replacement filters I ordered and the honest shipping costs
Among the order was a flush kit. After I installed it, I checked the flow after the kit/restrictor with both the flush valve on and off. I was expecting the flow to increase dramatically after the flush kit but it did not change at all. The flow is the same out of the restrictor and out of the flush kit. Is that normal?
The restrictor says Flow (then an arrow) 800. Do restrictors go bad?
PS: Thanks for the extra DI resin since I was a bit messy filling my cartridge:D

Doni what is the flow to production rate with the flush valve closed it should be 4:1. Very easy to measure with 2 half gallon milk containers.
Jim
I just measured them and something is wrong. I am getting 2 to 1. :(
I need some help with it PLEASE. I have taken a pic of the setup and would really appreciate your help in trying to determine what I have messed up. lol I have added many gadgets to it over the past few years and chances are I have something hooked up wrong
What email would you like me to send the pic too?

Send it to the filterguys@charter.net and it takes me a while to think in the middle of the night but it sounds like you still have the old flow restrictor in place.

Good morning Jim sent you the wrong e-mail address *&%%##

Your old flow restrictor may be internal in the waste line located where the waste line connects to the membrane fitting.
Jim
Whoops~ I resent it.
Nope, there is a check valve there at the membrane out. You'll see on the pic I just sent you.
I will order a new restrictor if necessary.

Doni I was thinking you replaced the flow restrictor also. If you open the flush valve you say the flow is the same that tells me it is not the flow restrictor. Is it possible you have another flow restrictor in the waste line between the membrane and your new flow restrictor flush valve. It could be in the tubing or the membrane elbow? I looked at your pic and can't see anything wrong but I can't see the plumbing on the top around the membrane.
Jim
So everything is hooked up right?? Go me~ ;)
Nope, I did not order a new restrictor.
Here is a better pic of the membrane. There is a check valve (came with the Kent Auto-shut off kit) on the waste water output (white tube). Would that have a restrictor built in?

I am seriously considering getting your auto-shut off kit and removing the kent parts.

I think that valve is restricting the flow and giving you your 2:1 restricted flow. Try removing it and see if things change and everything still works!!

Thanks Jim!
After concentrating on the checkvalve and re-reading the installation instructions, I discovered that I had the checkvalve on the wastewater and it should have been on the product water. DUH~ I fixed that and my waste/product ratio is now abour 3:1 and the flow through the flushkit bypass is a little more water than through the restrictor. Tap water is ~80 ppm; the TDS pre-DI is 7ppm; post-DI is zero.
Should I change the restrictor to get a better rejection rate?
Also... Does the kent selenoid reduce water pressure much?
MY pressure gauge is just before the selenoid and it registers around 50 psi but the water pressure coming through the flush kit seems very weak...
Does your selenoid work better?

The flow restrictor is the correct one for a 100 GPD membrane sounds like you solenoid may be the source of all your problems. If your pressure gauge is after your filters before your membrane you might see a 5 pound drop with new filters but not 30!!! Try bypassing the solenoid and see if things improve.
The solenoid is only there to shutoff the waste water once your float valve closes and should not restrict flow. Our ASOV would work better then what your experiencing now for sure.
