hey yall, I just wanted to inroduce myself to the forum. I am in miami and I am building m first reef tank. I have maintained a 40g freshwater for 4 years and I will be starting off reefkeeping with another 40g. Just got one question for you guys, what type of lighting is good for healthy growth on a 40g? The dimensions are 36x12x21. I plan to keep a mixed reef if thats possible. I was thinking about 2 175 14k MH and 2 T5 actinincs. Is this ok? Some of my friends say that is too much and will char the corals. Any suggestions for lighting? Thanks. This forum is awesome, wish I found it earlier.

If your tank is indeed 21" tall (or more) then halides are a good way to go. With that much light (I know because I had 2x175 MH on a 40) you will most likely need a chiller or a heck of a set of fans.

Recommend 250 DE or 400SE.. If you will go with MH. 175 is not enough for sps..

Sps is such a broad term that you really can't say ALL sps wouldn't work with 175's. Monti's among others wouldn't be difficult with that amount of lighting.
