Bought a red carnation leather coral today at my LFS. Didn't look to much at the base it was attached to. Got it placed in my tank, and just as it was opening up nice, all off a sudden I notice the whole coral shift, and close up.

Upon closer inspection, I notice the base isn't a base at all, but a shell, the shell of a living oyster or some other type of muscle. The oyster is about 2.5" in diameter, and I'll post a picture here, but the question is, let it be, or shuck it? The coral sure doesn't seem to like it when the oyster opens and closes...

That's an oyster. Tough decision for me. I will probably leave them alone. How would the carnation attach to the oyster without it detecting any movement, I wonder. I doubt if the oyster will live long in captivity unless you feed plenty of phyto. Good luck with whatever decision you make. PS, carnation is tough to keep healthy as well, AFAIK.

Nicely done BigMojo! I'd leave them in tact. Also as Whisperer says, carnations are difficult to keep (all i know is they prefer low light and strong current). Read up on them well. Good luck!

Feed him dt's. He and what he rode in on probably like low light and may use plankton or cyclopeeze.
