Is there any proof that clams are detrimentally affected by soft coral terpenoids?

I have a huge (6") Crocea and 2 smaller (2-3") Deresas in with Xenias, GSPs, and various softies and they have never shown any signs of stress or poor growth...

My tank is pretty much overun with softcorals and a few hards corals. I have two clams, one squamosa and one derasa. Both of my clams are showing wonderful growth rates and look great, one even has a shrimp inside of it. I would see no reason not to have clams with corals! I do however make sure that the corals do not touch my clams.

I second what scubajsm said. My Crocea does just fine with a frogspawn on one side and a hammer on the other. Let it be known that this is the second clam though. My first pushed itself off of the rockwork and it fell onto the frogspawn one night and by morning it was a gonner. That is why this one is on the bottom where it can't fall. HTH

What's a terpenoid?

a noxious chemical put out by soft corals to stunt the growth of surrounding corals, AFAIK

It's a chemical produced by soft corals. The act of exuding that chemical is called Allelopathy. For that matter, most of our tanks and our husbandry habits don't allow the chemicals to build up sufficiently to cause any detrimental effects. If you plan on running activated carbon and keeping up with water changes, you won't have problems.
