Anyone run a skimmerless tank?

I'm thinking about pulling out my skimmer and turning my sump into one large fuge / cryptic zone. I'm just afraid that it won't be able to keep up with the waste produced by my display and I'll be overcome with algae.

Any skimmerless keepers have any input?
