I have a bleaching purple encrusting montipora. Started out slow about 1 week ago and rapidily grew over half of the coral, approx 3 inches in the last couple days.

Chemistry all looks good.

The coral sits directly under a 400 watt DE MH (about 12 inches below) but the bulb is about a year old. I know its time to change it by time is tight right now and I'd prefer to pick one up over the weekend. But I'm afraid I'll loose the coral by then.

Can such rapid bleaching really be related to the aging bulb? If it is unlikely, then I'll persue other solutions and get the bulb this weekend. If it really could be the cause then I'll have to find time.

Thanks!

Are you sure Alk is OK? Any specific changes in the last 3 weeks like relocation with different flow?

It was the ALK, now fixed and looking ok. Thanks!
