My buddy has a fresh water tank with algae growing in it. It looks to be like a microalgae. It's just free floating in the water and the water is green. I know salt water but I really can't say I know fresh water aquaria.
How does he get rid of this algae?
Do we need to setup a algal scrubber?
any help would b appreciated.
Thanks

that sounds like a dirty tank thats been ignored for a while. I would say vacuum the gravel, and change lots of water

I have had fresh water tanks for along time. The best thing to do for this is do a 25% water change every other day for a few weeks, be sure to scrape the algae off the glass before you drain the water and siphon off as much as you can vacuum out the gravel if you have gravel. And after the two weeks of water changes add aquarium salt to the tank about one tablespoon to 10 gals of water.

Sounds like algae along with possible algae bloom in the water. While I would typically agree with Meco on this, the algae bloom in the water may be continually fueled by repeat water changes....IF the water being used is causing the issue. Most likely it's due to either far too much lighting or too long of a photoperiod or somebody really needs to up their tank maintance skills.
Ask your friend to get some quality water tests performed, if he's using simple test strips, advise him that won't be adequate enough, and to go to a LFS for testing. You know saltwater so you should be able to judge the test results. Looking specifically for high nitrates, phosphates.
