I just purchased an Ocean Reef +1, and am now trying to figure out where to install it to provide me with the most flexibility for holding tanks. Living in Southern California, where the weather is mild all year round, I'm wondering if I could just mount it on the exterior of my house by the water heater (which is housed in a metal box outside the house). On those rare nights it freezes, I could simply disconnect the unit and bring it inside---I assume it wouldn't harm the holding tanks (I was thinking simple plastic barrels) to freeze.

So, the question is, has anyone had experience with external mounts? Does direct sunlight impact the efficacy or longevity of the unit? I suppose it would get quite hot in the summertime---it occasionally passes 90 around here. If it's just sunlight that's an issue, I could enclose the unit in a box. The heat, on the other hand, would be a more challenging issue...

You must protect it from the sun or it will grow algae and not sure how high heat, 100 plus degrees, will impact the membrane. Be sure your barrels are food grade plastic or you will have chemical leeching issues.
