Should I add sand to the middle section of my sump? I read someone say not to because it will get into my return pump. Anyone have any thoughts??

I wouldn't bother with sand, personally. Some Chaetomorpha might be okay, although it might get into the pump. I don't know how well Chaetomorpha would tolerate ammonia and other byproducts of live rock curing.

I've asked the same question before.

My main tank is 55G, and my sump is 20G like your's but my fuge area is 20% volume of my tank. Right now I have macro algae lighted by 2x24W 10k t5s and it's growing well and keeps my phopshates at 0.

I wouldn't bother with sand in the fuge. Just have enough in your main tank and you should be fine.

Some eggcrate should be fine for keeping the live rock off the bottom and perhaps reducing the odds of cracking the sump by accident.
