View Full Version : Can I use a 60gpd membrane in my 35gpd unit?

Hey all,

I've got a Kent Hi-S 35gpd RO/DI unit and it's time to replace the membrane. The cost difference between the 35gpd and the 60gpd isn't much, so I'm wondering if I can use that in my 35gpd unit. I can't find anything about the physical size of the unit, so I don't know if it would fit into the housing. Has anyone tried this?

The size of all membranes up to 100 GPD and in some cases 150 GPD is the same. I would look at a 75 GPD Dow Filmtec or a 90 GPD Spectrapure Select membrane if it were me. Make sure to get a matched flow restrictor to go along with whatever you buy.

Ditto and upgrading the membrane and restrictor. Email the fiterguys for more info on the parts needed.

Everything is the same, but you must change out your 35gpd restrictor if you want to change to a 100gpd, that all you have to do beside buy the 100gpd membrane

Thanks guys. I'd forgotten about the restrictor, so thanks for the heads-up. I just moved into a new place and it's got much greater pressure than my old place(built in 1921!), so it's a good thing you mentioned it.

Don't get a Dow 100 GPD membrane. Stick with a 75 or the Spectrapure 90. The Dow 100 is only 90% rejection, the Spectrapure is a individually hand tested and guaranteed 98+% which is night and day different.

That is quite a difference. I was curious about how others felt about the Hi-S. I personally didn't see much a difference(objectively. I didn't measure) between my results with my own R/O water or that I got from a non Hi-S source. I haven't been able to get any data on our water here in Salt Lake City yet though.

I'll take a look at the Spectrapure as I like the 98%+ both on my wallet and the environment!

Hey, djcerna is right. Before you buy, you should check with Jim at thefilterguys.biz. They have any part you need, for any system, not just theirs, and more importantly, lots of knowledge. Great guys, got my RO/DI system from them with no complaints.

Nobody in the industry individually hand tests and guarantees their membranes like Spectrapure. I agree Filter Guys is a great place to do business and Jim is quite knowledgable but there is a difference when it comes to RO membranes. Studies show a 2% increase in membrane efficiency doubles the life of DI resin. That can add up very quickly if you make much water. My Select membrane has averaged 99.23% for the last year and when I last made water it was even higher than that. My Tap water TDS was 839 and the RO only TDS was 4.6 for a rejection rate of 99.45% . No other membrane can match those numbers, even a standard Dow Filmtec.
