Ok, i just brought home a frag of zoas from where i work, and i think i got a pistol shrimp on it. I had some sort of shrimp anyways...it was really small so its hard to tell what kind. It was like a quarter inch only, mostly transparent, and on the back end it had like darker stripes. It also had one big claw. I may have been stupid putting it in my tank w/out knowing what it is, but thats besides the point :) I've already heard a couple popping noises, so hopefully its just a pistol. I'm pretty sure it is, but can anyone verify?

Not without a pic, SDG. You should know that :lmao: FWIW, it sounds like a pistol, but if it was transparent, it could have been an anemone shrimp or something.

haha ya i know. There's no way i'm gonna get a pic of him now though. Quarter inch transparent shrimp in a 40g tank w/50 or so pounds of rock and coraline covering the sides of the tank?
Anywho, what are anemone shrimp? Are those bad?

An anemone shrimp isn't bad. After putting a good sized branching SPS in my tank a while back, I was staring at it and notice two little white crabs dancing around in there. I believe they are Acro Crabs, but close to the same thing. Anemone crabs are usually seen hosting carpet anemones. I wouldn't see it presenting a problem.
I'm not sure what a mantis shrimp looks like at that size, but that might turn out to be trouble if it's a mantis shrimp. Most likely it's not, as what you described sounds to be a pistol shrimp.

google search "Anemone Shrimp" There are dozens out there, and each one is different, but they all have just about the same name.

well after doing a google image search, its definitely not an anemone shrimp, which looks like a sexy shrimp to me??? I just didnt know they were called that as well lol. And besides, those dont pop their claws, do they?
I did find this as a pistol on google... The pic is stupid small, but whatever...closest thing i can find, and to me it almost looks exactly like this one...i think lol.

Then you probably have a close match. BTW, I forgot that another name for Sexy Shrimp is Anemone Shrimp. When you said clear, this is definitely clear...

lol thats funny you say that you've seen them in zoas...thats where i got mine lol. I work at a petco and it seems that we do get really nice stuff in there. I'll have to see if i can take a pic of these zoas, because i got them for like 20 bucks and the rock had over 100 polyps i'd say and they're pretty nice...just kinda pinkish and clay color, but different than everything else i got :)
Anyone know how big that pistol will grow? Or what its real name is? Or if it would pair up w/a goby (assuming they FIND eachother? lol)

Ya thats what happened for me...i got this big rock w/like a hundred polyps and i was splitting it w/my aunt, so i was taking the hammer and screw driver to the rock...broke it apart, put her frag in the tank, and re-bagged my half so i could take it home and i saw him in there. I dunno..i guess i'm just excited about getting my first hitch hiker  and its been over 2 years now...i dont get how i never get anything and i always hear about this stuff.

looks like it might be a tiger pistol shrimp. "Don't qoute me" . And if you have any cleaner shrimp the pistol might eat them. Also a goby would pair up with it just try to fid the shrimps burrow and put the goby right in front of itand they should find each other.

Pistol eat the cleaner? I have both, and they seem to leave each other alone. All the pistol does all day is build things like archways and bridges out of rubble and steal my algae clip when it falls off the glass. It will live under a rock with him and the goby for a few days, and then I'll find it somewhere else in the tank when he decides he doesn't like it.

Well thanks, I've learned something today. We'll see what happens I guess. I suppose it wouldn't be wise to throw three peppermint shrimp in there to hopefully eat the aptasia that's getting out of control.
