I bought a cleaner shrimp for my 15g holdover tank the other day and it was dead by morning. I did a 30 minute temp/water acclimation, so I took my water to the LFS to test it to make sure my test kit is "on" the mark. Everything checked out except my salinity. Dude at LFS says that the glass bobbing type of hydrometer is more accurate vs the plastic Instant Ocean version I've been using. So I buy one at $4.99 and take it home to check my 15g and my 90g...both were reading 1.018 vs my plastic reading of 1.022. So is he correct? I have a peppermint shrimp, coral banded shrimp and some crabs in my display w/o issue...did this low salinity kill my cleaner shrimp or did I not acclimate it long enough?

I think it was both. 30 minutes is a short time to acclimate inverts. I'd say at least an hour or two. A big difference in salinity and short amount of acclimation time probably killed it. I'd get a refractometer as they are accurate, unlike the other types.
