Hi all,

im am re-setting up an old 55g tank i had as a reef, but due to lack of experience and patience it failed. Anyway i put my coral sand and live rock back in (its base rock now) and filled with salt and R/O water. its running on a canister now but a sump and skimmer, are on the cards for the near future. the canister turns over 1000ltrs/h.

I have 3 powerheads, 2x aquaclear802, (400g/h each), and a crappy old thing thats only doing bout (80g/h).

Do you think this is enough flow or not? its around 1200g/h including the canister.

What should i be aiming for?

the powerheads are hard to see so i marked them.

ignore the backdrop, this tank was used as a freshwater and i haven't removed it yet.:)

Also... i am adding some live rock soon to seed the base, then im just going to let it cycle for a month or 2.

The amount of flow will be based on what you plan on keeping in the tank.

Based off your 1200gph that is about 22x turnover in the tank. You may want to think about dumping those AC's in favor of either a couple Koralia or Tunze 6025/45. They offer more flow and it is a much more dispersed flow. I have both a Koralia 4 and a AC 802 in my 75 and I prefer the flow out of the K4 over the AC. Not just because it is much higher flow, but because of the way it actually flows in the tank. It is not a steady stream, but develops a nice wave throughout the tank.

What Kind Of Lighting System is that on your tank?

a crappy system. :) just 2 NO daylight tubes and 1 deep sea special atinic. Will upgrade to 2x 250w 14k halides and a couple 80w atinics when i step up to the 120g.
