has anyone ever tried to take a small piece of say 1/4" acrylic rod, cut it about an inch long, and glue a frag to one end of it? I am just wondering if that would work as a frag plug? will super glue gel bond an SPS frag to acrylic rod?

Most of my sps are done that way.
I pre-drilled my LR when I did my last swap for this.
I wanted to be able to move corals as needed, works great.
I'll take a pic of one.

Correct term for this is pegging.
REEFVIDEOS.COM has good vid of this.
All my corals, and many of my rocks are pegged.

Some people even peg on magnets, and put on the back of the tank.
