Espresso Colored Stains....What type of wood to use?

I just placed and order on my Elos tank and I'm in the planning phase of my DIY stand. I plan on staining it a dark espresso color to match the overall decor of my home. What is a good wood to use with that colored stain? I was planning on using Birch or Maple but read that these types of wood don't take stains well and even using a wood conditioner will not guarantee an even application. Any thoughts on this?

I just stained my maple stand a dark expresso and am overall happy with the results. I used the varathane brand, no wood conditioner, just a good sanding before staining. Ill try to get you the exact color i used because the dark expresso was the color i was going for to match my enterior as well. ill take a pic tonight hopefully.
