Dr. RHF,

Thanks for all the dedication to the reefing community, greatly appreciated.

It's been a few years since the article regarding aluminum based phosphate removers. Considering there is now a longer history of their use, is there any greater level of confidence?

I wouldn't really even bother with aluminum based removers but.....it was my understanding that they work efficiently and, more importantly, you can tell by their color when they need to be changed. I never know when to change my iron based removers since most test kits don't measure the low range well and I end up using the electronic version at my LFS.

Thanks for any help!

The issue with aluminum media is that they might cause problems with corals. A lot of reefers reported problems with it, so the GFOs seem more popular now. That's what I use. This article discusses an experiment that was done:

That was the article that I was referencing in my post. I knew there were reported problems and concerns with in the past but wasn't sure if the concerns continued to have merit since the products now have a longer history of use in the hobby?

You could ask in the SPS forum to see how many people are still using aluminum phosphate binders. There are a couple of people using them who post in this forum, but not many.
