When a mandarin goby "strikes" do they really see something?

I watch my mandarin for hours, and he's always pecking at the rocks, but I rarely see what it seems he does. Is he getting something to eat, or does he sometimes peck at nothing?

He has found something to eat. Usually its a copod. Hope your tank has alot of them, because thats all he will usually eat.

Yeah, I know that copepods are the Mandarins main diet. My tank has been running four close to 4 years, and I have a fuge that's full of critters. I was just wondering if when he pecks, does that always mean that he's finding something.
