I recently switched tanks and transfered over. The only new thing is a ~5" DSB.
My skimmer since setting up on this new tank 9 days ago has filled the cup twice with a Tan skimmate. Like a tan suede coat or boots in color. No hint even of brown or green.
It is stank just like a nice brown mud collection though.

It has a hint of white to it.
I've never seen this color before, what is it due to??

Maybe it's the really fine sediment from the new sand?

Ahh...perhaps I didn't rinse as well as I thought. Thanks.
I bet that's it as I've never seen this before.

Sand storm residue. Nothing to worry about. The tank will settle and you will not get it anymore.

Need to rinse better next time. Maybe for an hour each 1/4 bucket, lol.

sand or maybe a bacterial bloom, who knows what gets pulled out of these little mini-ecosystems we make. In fact I think we know very little of what actually constitutes skimmate, as in what exactly does a skimmer pull out of the water? I read a thread somewhere that a researcher was asking for skimmate samples from hobbyists, but I have seen much since then.

I read the same thread about the guy researching skimmate. But nothing ever came about.
