Is possible to have a 2 story sand bed? As in you have your regular sand bed on the bottom of the tank but then you have a flat piece of rock up in your rock work and have it surrounded by other rocks and you put sand in there. would that work?

That actually sounds like it would look nice! I have never seen it done but i dont see why you couldnt do it. Just make sure its positioned so you dont have ridiculas sand storms when yoour ph's are on.

yea, i could see potential sand storm problems...but if you can work everything out with your flow, it could be cool

ive never seen it done either, i was actually thinking about it from (finding nemo - suprisingly(the scene where the school meets, and there's rocks all around it - with the sponge beds) I don't have a big enough tank to try it out i just think it would look cool too

You may be able to use some shelf rock, and find a saw to cut some strips of it then somehow glue them together on the sides to hold the sand. I am getting some of this rock tuesday which is like 1/4 inch flat sheets and I am playing with the idea of creating a staircase in our new 120 for all our micro's and blastos. Dont want it to look like a feshwater set up though.

Neat idea. Definitely a DIY job to seal the bottom of the 2nd story sandbox, otherwise I imagine that it'd be empty eventually. Then, strategically place it where there's low flow.

You could make the ridge to hold the sand with spray foam.

the spray foam hypertech mentioned would actually be alot easier to create a ridge around the edge of some shelf rock. 2crazyreefers idea with cutting some strips to make the ridges is also doable....just more time but you will achieve a more natural look. the foam eventualy will look natural aswell.

sound like a good idea, should look pretty neat, only problem i can think of is a goby that thinks the sand should be somewhere else.
