View Full Version : The Right CL Pump

I currently have a Poseidon PS4 for my CL system. This pump is compact and quiet but has far to much heat transfer. My tank is 36"L x 20"T x 20"W and the plumbing is 3/4" entering the tank. I'm considering a Quiet One 4000 High Head pump that I will run as an external pump (not sure what high head means?). My two main concerns are 1) heat transfer, and 2) power consumption. The Quiet One 4000 is rated at 120 W compared to 140 W for the Poseidon but there is no mention of heat transfer.
Can anyone comment on their personal experiences with Quiet One pumps and any other external pumps that I should consider.
Thanks

I'm using a PS4 on my 120 and havent noticed much a heat transfer, some yes but nothing that a sump fan can't take care of. I've used quiet ones and found them reliable, I've also used Iwaki and liked them as well.

It may be due to your tank being twice as large as mine and I assume your sump is quite large, as well, to handle your 120. I presume that both our pumps generate the same amount of heat; your 120 is able to handle it more effectively than my 62??
The Marine Depot web site warns that the PS4 can raise the water temp 4-6 degrees. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of this when the pump was recommended to me. :(

You're not goign to notice much difference there. Both of these are water cooled pumps. Its ~120w of heat for the quietone, ~140w for the poseidon.

Its too bad you used such small plumbing....as its really impossible to use a low wattage flow pump on 3/4"

What is the consensus on an Eheim 1262?

90w, not a huge difference. Also will be a HUGE dropoff in flow.
