View Full Version : Sand size and type?
What are the considerations for the size and type of sand for a new tank setup? I have read some things about sand depth but nothing about size and type? There is sugar size as well as larger, chunkier types. There is Bimini, Fiji, Indo-Pacific, Florida, etc. Then there is aragonite, crushed coral, oolite, and mixtures. Is it personal preference?

I would say it is a matter of personal preference! But some say that the large crushed coral can cause nitrite, nitrate and
ammonia to be high.

It also makes a big difference on what you plan to keep (critter wise). Gobies like sugar size IMO and will not do as well in crushed coral. Some of the snails and shrimp that bury themselves or did will not do well in CC IMO either.
