Hello everyone,

I am new here, and sorry for my poor english, I am french guy!

So, my question is how to decrease my MG level in my tank.
PH : 8.10 - 8.40
KH : 9.6
CA : 400
MG : 1580

The tank has a little sump with a bio reactor and hydroxyde reactor. The tank has a plenum (jaubert method). The corals growth is high but the feet of each have little necrosis. The MG level is the main reason.

Anybody has solution ?

Thank you

[welcome]

That level of Mg isn't usually report to cause such problems, but it might. I'd do some water changes. That's the most practical way to deal with the problem, assuming the freshly-mixed water is okay in magnesium. I'm not sure how the Mg got that high. Was some supplement added?

Measure the water you use for water changes before using it. Also, have someone else (a friend, a store) double check your measurment of Mg in the tank and the new water. Get a triple check if you can. The test kit might be giving false readings. If not, water changes are your best bet (though I'm not sure there is anything detrimental to having Mg at that concentration).

Thx for your reply,
2 different test used...
No supplement added.
I changed 35 liters this evening, tomorrow, I will do a test.
Only montipora have problem.
The MG level is high since I added my bio reactor.

Perhaps the media is high in Mg?

The media is sand : Florida crushed Coral from Caribsea.

Hmmm, it would seem counterintuitive that this would be high in Mg, but I suppose it is possible....

That media would seem to be okay to me, too, but at this point, I'd try another one. Perhaps someone more familiar with calcium reactors than I am will have some comments.

I m not using classical calcium reactor. I am trying a new solution with a 4 chambers reactor. I have no CO2 bottle. The first chamber produce bacteria with vodka, the media in this one is zeolith, the chambers 2,3,4 are full of sand. The bacteria produce CO2 and ...
I will change 50% of my water on 4 days and see. If the level stay too high after 1 month, I stop my reactor and try to change the media.

Your levels don't' make sense as Mg++ does not fit well into Aragonite crystal lattice. It may be that this media, although claimed to be Aragonite, may be Hi- Mg -Calcite a different beast or coated with Hi-Mg-Calcite. With that said, it may also be a testing error/interference post reactor from the vodka and other products.

Thx Boomer for your reply,
I did test in new saltwater to follow you but vodka does not seem to change the value after 1 drop in the test...
This day, I have change 70 liters, the new value is 1480mg/l.
Wait and see now !
