I've been thinking about getting an Aqua-c Remora Pro protein skimmer for my 75 gallon reef tank I will be setting up soon, because I've heard some pretty good reviews on it. Is this a good skimmer, or what would you guys recommend?

Are you using just the skimmer for you systems filtration, or are you thinkign of using a sump too?

The Remora is a solid skimmer but you could probably do better w/ some of the nw skimmers that are out there. I've owned both and prefer a nw.

I was planning on having the skimmer in a sump. What's the best size for a sump on a 75 gallon tank?

I had a Remora with the upgraded MJ-1200 pump and a pre-skimmer box in the sump of my 75-gallon aquarium. I do not recommend the Remora because it collected very little skimmate compared to the Tunze 9010 that I replaced it with. This picture on the bottom left of the AquaC website shows how little is collected: http://www.proteinskimmer.com/products/Remora.htm. Note the caption: “Two weeks of collection.”

Even the more powerful Remora Pro will not find optimal placement in a sump. Hang-on skimmers do not normally fare well in a sump because the water level in the sump is lower than the water level in an aquarium. The pump must work harder to pump the water from the sump into the skimmer and therefore less power is available for foam generation. Note that the Remora and Remora Pro depend on spray injection to generate foam. If the velocity of the spray is lessened by the lower sump water level, then less foam is generated.

If your going to have a sump then definitely go w/ another skimmer. You can find a used ER in the classifieds for pretty cheap. I seen a 5-2 for $100 shipped here the other day.

Pass......I wouldn't use one on a 29g tank if they paid me to. For the price of that skimmer get an octo NW 150 for a hundred less and it'll skim 50x's better. Utilize your sump. The tunze 9010 is good as well. There's tons of options for a 75g tank with a sump

I have an aqua c ev120 on a 55 with a 33 gallon sump. The skimmer is plumbed out of the sump with a mag 7. Works great but there are many other options available your setup. I would always recommend going with the next size up if you have the money and space.

Aqua c makes a decent in sump skimmer, unfortunately the remora and urchin are not good skimmers.

My true love is DIY skimmers, my true hate is when newbie's buy something waaaay overpriced that is complete junk. ; )

Buy it if you would like to waste 200-290 bones.
