Well like the title says, I'm looking to replace\upgrade The Sedra 5000 on my ASM G4.. I thought about trying a 9000 or maybe a ocean runner.. I'd like to get something that wouldn't need alot of adapting to connect the the skimmer though. Space is a little bit of an issue. I've got room for a larger pump, but not a larger pump and a ton of extra adapters. I'm a little worried about the 9000 cause it looks like the outlet is alot higher up then the 5000. I'd love to hear from someone who has upgraded there G4!

Better is a matter of opinion. I like what I have now.

I put an Octopus OTP-3000 pump which cost me less than $70 on my ASM G4+. I had to do the mods because out of the box it only pulls 5 lpm or less. Mine is pulling 15 lpm and drawing about 70watts.

If you are dedicated, you can probably get 20+ lpm out of the pump, but I don't think it is necessary or even desirable with this skimmer body/neck.

I asked the same question a few months ago here is the thread with the discussion:

Thanks for the replys guys.. I did a few searches and waited for a few days for some replys. I ended up just getting a Sedra 9000 to replace my 5000. It should be here tomorrow infact. I looked at a few pumps. Everything from a ocean runner to a gen-X.. I read a little on the OCT-3000 pump.. But most had the same problem as you.. Underpowered I've heard the same with people that bought a skimmer with the pump.. I don't have any interest in doing a mesh mod.. I haven't heard to many good things about it long term. Everything from pumps burning up, random overflows, to having to redo it every few months. I rather just spend a lil more and get a set it and forget it pump.. My sedra 5000 is over 2 years old and still going very strong.. I'm just moving it to my G2 at my office.

I almost got the Sedra 9000 with Euro Reefs Needle wheel insted of the asm.. But I could find little to no information on what the difference between them was and why the ER one was 40 bucks more.. Anyone know?
