View Full Version : Fire bad

Well, while moving into my new house I had my LFS tank sit while I got the painting done, the new floors in, etc. I had a little bit of bad luck.

Lightening struck the LFS in the middle of the night, causing a small smouldering electrical fire. The power went out and pretty much all of my livestock kicked the bucket. It looked like a 150g casket. There was some smoke and soot damage to the cabinetry, but it should make it with a little work.

All the rock was still good, and I did find a handfull of bristle worms still kicking in the bottom of the tank sludge, a brittle star that looked pretty rough and 1 snail.

Pretty dam sad. I had stuff in that tank over 8 years old.

I had one day to get the tank out of the LFS, get it home and plumb it in. Took me about 22 hours straight of labor. I'm going to let it run on it's own for about a month before I start putting anything back into it.

I've seen the "2 island set" up in a few pics, and I like the idea of having a little more surface area of sand for the clams (the one I lost in the tank was a 9" deresa) and I kinda like the look. There are some rocks I will rearrange, it was a little hard to see what I was sticking my hands into with all the sediment in the water whan I was setting it up.

Here are some before and after pics... I don't have any of it in the LFS after the fire.

Sorry to hear that. You had a very nice tank. Think of how much fun you'll have picking out all new livestock! I hope the LFS will reimburse you for your losses.

Sorry about your loss. I know its very tough. But maybe that's just God's way of telling you it's time to upgrade to 300gallons :)

Looks like you have your probes plugged into your plumbing, how did you do that? Did you diy the probe holders, or were they something you bought?

I'll take some up close pics of the probes and the fittings they go into for you, just give me some time today to get around to it. I can also provide part numbers for you, if you need them.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments! I can't wait to start restocking the tank, there are quite a few different things I want to try with the new setup!

OK, here are the pics I promised!

The fitting is actually a watertight electrical component known as a Conduit Cord Connector. It's a compression fitting made by HUBBELL, anf the part # is SHC1023CR.

I screwed it into a 1" slip x 1" slip x 1/2" threaded fitting using pipe dope.

You can see by the pictures I used a Gate Valve to reduce the amount of flow passing over the probes and I used 2 True Union Ball Valves on either side of the probe assembly so that it could be completely shut down and removed for servicing without shutting down the system.
