Ordinary dry aragonite sand, 1lb per gallon of refugium, several pounds of coral rubble, biggest ball of cheato you can find: PC lighting on up to 24/7, but more than your display, so it gets dibs on the fertilizer, and good flow for cheato: it needs to have water move through it. It makes a real good anti-bubble filter. I put my outflow from my skimmer before it in the flow.

for a 30 thats kinda small i would think, i have a 29 with a 15 gal refugium, i would go bigger

it would work, but if you went with a hob overflow and a larger refugium you could have more filtration stuff like a skimmer, phosphate reactor underneath the tank out of sight

with my 29, if i had everything hob i am sure it would be cluttered and with it all underneath and just the hob overflow it makes it look so much cleaner looking, from boththe back and inside the tank, and if you wanted to go this route you could even drill a hole and build a overflow inside the tank, i tried, but shattered my tank, it was tempered glass, but if you had the space under your stand you could get all that out the way and out of sight.

Coral rubble sometimes available from a dealer in live rock, and if that won't work, live rock rubble will---a little cheaper than prime live rock: I got mine from my lfs in Spokane, who maintains tubs curing at all times. I'll bet there's somebody in NY who does much the same.
