Funny Frag

This frag has been interesting. I've had it for a while and it has not grown from the original frag what so ever. It did however make a pretty large base and has since grown very quickly from the base. The first head shooting upwards was about 8 or 9 weeks ago.

Original frag & plug it was mounted on are clearly visible.

Another interesting note is today it sent out these super long extensions of its polyps that seem to be 2" or more in length. Any idea what these are?

Mesenterial filaments, they are basically guts. I have had this happen after I introduct food to the tank or they can be used in coral wars.

Yep, those can be a good thing...and a bad thing too. If it does it alot you might notice recession on the area they come out of.

This is the first time I've seen it & I had just fed the tank with cyclopeeze soaked in garlic, Zoe & selcon.

First time that I've fed that in months. I've been lazy the last couple months and only feeding mysid & nori.

No chance at all. I've had this coral for a year & watched it move across the rock and start these two new branches from nothing. The original coral and plug that I epoxyed to the rock have not grown one milimeter in a year. The way it looks now is EXACTLY the way I got it a long time ago.

I'm reasonably sure it's an A. hyacinthus, but it does look like a millepora on the left side.

I think you guys know but just to make sure. They are the same coral. Its just the original one on the left has decided not to grow but it grew a base that decided to start new heads.

They are white because of the new growth, which has been extremely fast. Those two heads were not there just 2 or 3 months ago.

I have a small colony that did exactly this. No new growth on the branches, it encrusted out and made completely new branches that look like a completely different coral. I have had it for about 3 years. This is not a very good picture but the left half is the coral when I originally got it, all the right is new growth. Notice the different corallite structures.

I have a frag that did something similar. It was 3 sticks about the same size (1"). 2 of them have hardly grown, one has grown to about 5" with multiple branches.

I have seen similar things happen. I have cut off the original frag and then the coral starts to grow over that area.

If you cut the tips off the original frag, it will often cause it to begin growing. I've used this trick quite a few times and you'd be surprised how often it will work.

I have a green Milli that has not done anything for a year except encrust 1" around it's base. Just a few weeks ago, it sprouted 3 or 4 new shoots from around the edge, and they look nothing like the parent.
