I am ready to buy a return pump so that i can set up my sump/fuge. I have a 75 gal tank and am going to be using a 29 as a sump/fuge/return....

I am looking at getting either a mag 7 or mag 9.5....which one would be best. I know the more flow the better, but how much flow should go through the sump/fuge? I have a few powerheads in the tank now and a canister that i am just using for flow.

Should i get the 7 or the 9.5? I would rather spend less money, but if the 7 is not going to be enough i would rather get the 9.5 now....or do i even need bigger than that. I am probably going to have like 3-4 feet of head. I am leaning towards the 9.5? Any thoughts?

forget about the mags and get an Ocean Runner 2500 or Ehiem 1260

Let me piggyback: we're going to put our 'fuge up high and let gravity carry it back to our tank. What's a good filter to raise the water from our sump under our tank, through a wall, and up to the 'fuge, sitting on a shelf at about 7 feet off the ground?

I assume you mean what's a good pump for the amount of head?

I am moving water up 7 feet from the basement with a mag3600. I am running externally to keep the heat down in the sump so they are a bit noisy.

try the head loss calculator on the home page its pretty good

:( Yep. Sorry; late here. I meant pump, not filter! What about a quieter one? Would a pump rated for 3200 Lph (we have a cracked one) in our sump move it up to a refugium seven feet off the ground from a sump (at floor level, under the tank)?

you have to check out the stats for that pump--the flow rate is not an indication of how much head it is capable of pumping through

----the lines bends etc add to the equation also.
My 3600 goes down to 2000 gal per hour wiht seven feet of head the restrictions in the lines, control valves etc.

Buddy-
I have the mag 7 in my 90 gallon and it is more than enought flow through the sump. I would not go up tot he 9.5 for a 75 gallon IMO. The mag 7 (or equivalent other brand) is the way to go. The rest of the flow can come from powerheads.
