I want to get an extra submersible pump and put my Mag7 into storage as a backup pump.
I was looking to get an Eheim 1262 but space is limited in the sump. What is the next best alternative pump for the Mag7 that is:
1. Comparable in size
2. Will produce less heat
3. Use less power
4. As durable as Mag 7
Thank you for any advice and experiences.

How about the Rio HF17? I am using a Rio2100 which is pretty comparable but there are some horror stories that will scare most people away. :)

It is those same stories that have kept me from looking at Rio.
Are there any others that have seen an improvement when switching from a Mag Drive to another comparable pump?
I switched over to Ocean Runner pumps. The 3500's put out around 900 gph and run cooler and more silent.

I just went through this for my skimmer feed pump, i wanted to get the Eheim 1262 but it was $125 bucks, and the mag 7 was $65. I have two other mags, i know people say they are not the best pump, but i have had my main return pump (mag36) running for 3 yrs. I also have a mag24 for my skimmer (recirc), and when it started to slow down i took it apart, and ordered a new impeller. My LFS uses mags on alot of thier tanks. I my temp is always 81 (using ac jr).

I've had 2 RIOs fail on me so I don't think I'll ever give them the opportunity to disappoint me again. I think the MAG pumps are pretty reliable, but I have 3 Eheim 1262s and they've been bullet proof. One has been running continuously for well over 5 years. I've NEVER, EVER, had a problem with an Eheim pump.
