So i bought a purple tang today and i don't have my QT tank set up fully yet will be by tomorrow... Anyways he's been in the display for about 8 hours now....He's been acting completely normal and not displaying any irratic behavior or constantly swimming in high flow areas or rubbing on rocks... So i went to a movie and just got home to find him with a few very small white spots on various parts of the body.. He isn't breathing fast or anything i had mentioned above still....Not sure if this is the beginning of ich but to be on the safe side my QT tank will be done early tomorrow and i am going to purposely keep it at a low salinity because if i can escape using any medications i would rather do that.. Any suggestions on a good salinity to start with if this is indeed ich? I had also posted a thread two days ago about some particles floating after removing my HOB filter i had running beforoe my sump, Might this just be some sand or some of the fine particles, None of the other fish are displaying any out of the ordinary behavior or spots yet....I have an ich med on hand if it comes to that but was wondering how long i should wait with the low salinity before i drop to the level of needing a medication.. By the way i tested water before he was put in and all toxic params were 0 and tested again after noticing this about 20 minutes ago and toxic params are also 0..... I also read that ich tends to attach to fish during the "lights off" period so i will be keeping the blues on all night to try and limit any further damage, luckily my two clowns sleep at the top of the tank so they won't be down near the bottom at more risk... Any advice i am all ears

to anyone ineterested or that has read this i have come to the conclusion that it is indeed ich seeing as in the time it has taken me to write the past thread and finish the qt tank the white spots have grown in number, i successfully got the tang out of the tank and into QT with a salinity of 1.017, How long can i leave the tang in there before the osmotic shock will get to him? Hopefull i nipped this problem in the *** before it gets to the other fish, there aren't very many but i have grown partial to them and it would be very frusterating to lose them by my own mistake.... :(

well tangs being ich "magnets" hopfully he's the only one affected, you can keep him in QT for the next week or so with that SG, make sure he's eating well, try soaking all his food with selcon and garlic extract, best of luck!

For what it's worth, I wouldn't run the "blue lights" all night, added stress=worse ich outbreak. I would run only subdued lighting during the day if you can get away with it, and no lights at night

ok the whole running lights all night was before i was successful at getting him out, wasn't hard at all... So the lights remained on there regulars schedule... As for the tang he has been in QT all night and waking up i checked on him, the white spots are pretty much gone and he loves my little food mixture, Finely chopped krill, Cylclopeaze, brine and spirulina all compined, i was thinking of add very finely minced garlic to the mix, Would that work with any internal parasites?

Why are you working backward?
You should have waited until your QT is fully set up and the nitrification medium in it fully cycled before you bought your purple tang.
Now all the other fish may be infested. I hope your show tank does not have any invertebrate.
If your show tank does not have invertebrates, you can do hypo in the show tank.
If your show tank has a lot of invertebrates, it may be quite difficult.

Try the garlic, if nothing else, it will encourage his feeding.
