I love my Outer Orbit fixture but hated the legs used to mount it to the top of my tank. It was too close and caused me to constantly have to remove it to do any work on the tank. Unfortunately the room my tank is in has a 22 ft. ceiling and I could not hang the fixture from the ceiling. I finally came up with an alternative method of hanging the light.

I fabricated an arm out of rigid conduit that attached to the back of my stand and comes up and over the tank allowing me to hang my light from it. It came out great and gives me the room I need to work on the tank. Here's a few pics. The entire project cost under $30 to make.

What size pipe did you use.. and does is cause the light to sway at all? The pipe almost looks like galvanized pipe? Is this the case?

That looks great and may be exactly what I am looking for.

I also see you use egg crate for a top. How does that work as far as blocking the light and yellowing from the MH? I have glass tops which helps prevent too much evaporation but the black hinges block a bit of light.

Great solution. How did you bend the conduit?

I used 3/4 rigid pipe that I painted black to match. It ws not galvanized but it does come galvanized. The light does not move. It is mounted to the back of my stand using 2 u-bolts.

The eggcrate works great. The light being higher has helped to spread the light out more. I also have wedding veil over the grate to stop jumpers. I count on evaporation to help keep things cool in the tank. I finally feel like I have the light right where I need it.[B]

I actually bought the conduit pre-bent at Lowes. From there it was just a matter of using couplings to get it all together. This as a very easy project once I knew what was available to do the job.
