My Fuge has been running for a little over a week.

specs:

20gallon fuge (tank=150aga; sump=30gal)
3" of miracle mud
going to put in chaeto when I find some.
tank is 2 years old.

My fuge has nasty hair algae that is beginning to cover the mud. My display tank shows no sign of this algae and has been controlled with rowaphos for at least a year.

The flow in the fuge is not very high maybe 200-225 gph. I was told this was a good amount.

Will the fuge simply clear up in a couple weeks?

any ideas?

thanks.

How long do you leave the fuge lights on for?

reverse lighting schedule so maybe 12 hours

Light is a new 65W 6700K PC

Are you saying you're running the lights for 12 hours with no macro algae in the fuge?

Correct. Just running it for PH boost at night currently.

Isn't the PH boost that most go for with a reverse lighting schedule due to the photosynthesis of the algae in the fuge? I would assume that without any macro algae growing in there, the PH boost would not really be helping.

OK...so turn off the light until I get some green in there?

Well, as algae takes in carbon dioxide, the ph goes down. So to keep ph stable you would run the fuge on the reverse schedule. Technically, I think the hair algae would be doing this to an extent, but not much. I'm not sure how much it's helping the ph right now, so if it's not, I wouldn't light it for too long. I haven't done any compairisons of the ph in my tanks from day to night, so I don't really know. You could throw a few hermits in there, they might munch on the algae. Once you get some chaeto in there, it will probably take care of the problem. Since the miracle mud is full of nutrients, the only thing making use of them in there right now is the hair algae.

ok thanks

What kind of cleanup crew should I be using in the fuge ultimately?
