My feather was looking healthy coming in and out and I just discovered the feather duster part of the worm laying near a rock. Is this a form of reproduction, cycling dusters or just death ? I would apperciate any help.

It might be short on food, or the animal might have moved. Is any other animal harassing it? Hard to say. Dropping the feeding apparatus is a sign of stress.

I had one of mine drop it's "head" after a move, just make sure all your levels are good and within a few weeks it should regrow it's feathers

Short on food seems unlikely I supplemented phytoplanktons. Possible due to stress is the such a thing as too much flow. Not like a whirlpool but the flow sort of push the feathers to the side.

they do periodically just drop their feathers and grow new ones to, its not always about stress, it took mine near a month to grow new feathers
