I used a charcoal color on my new tank, and I kinda wished I would have done a Dark Blue color. I liked the Blue better.

I just use a flat enamel spray paint you can go with whatever color you want, they sell it at any local home improvement store. Works great never had a problem just make sure that you use tape and some newspaper to cover parts you don't want painted.

recommend going w/ either plexi or acrylic back piece painted color of choice that way you can remove it to look behind rockwork etc atleast this would allow you some options should you decide to go w/ black later on vs blue etc etc once its painted it would take a lot work to get the paint off should you decide to remove it later

Painting directly on the glass gives you the most even look to the color. Anything attached to the glass has the potential problem of pulling away giving a very inconsistent color. This happens to be one of my pet peaves with others people tanks.

Paint it. If you need to, you can always get out the paint thinner and a razor blade.

Dont think its possible to paint it since it up and running and wedged in a corner for the last 5 years

Sure. No problem. Can you get a roller back there?
