Pretty much a white plastic sheet which is used on the bottom of a tank. This way your tank can be BB ( bare-bottom ) without sand and you still have a clean white look and your rocks won't scratch the actual tank. BB tanks are ideal for SPS tanks as you can increase your flow and not have sand blowing everwhere. Here's my 37 gallon tank for an example when I was setting it up:

is it not just the same as your regular kitchen cutting boards?

Hrm, I wonder if you can do that and glue sand to it so it looks natural without the issues of sand

It's the exact same stuff. Here is the custom piece I order from the cutting board factory; it's gonna be the bottom of a 215g. I cut out the area for the overflows.

Cheekmonkey,

Before you glue sand to the bottom, you should contact King Kong; a board member (not to be confused with the large monkey from Skull Island.) He is on vacation according to one of his posts, but will be back next week. He glued sand to his bottom and eventually it caused him more headaches than he cared for.

Would this be better than using eggcrate?

might look better... but i think eggcrate would be ok as long as yuo have enough flow that stuff doesn't get trapped..
