I thought I've seen before that if a crab is fuzzy, don't put it in your tank, but I just wanted to make sure. I got a small (size of a nickel) crab on a piece of rock the other day and wanted to know if it is ok to go in my tank? As for now, it's in a bag.

most of the time fuzzy=bad.

look at the claws sharp and pointy are predatory.Ones with round and scoop like are ok but still need to be watched

In general crabs are not good. Why not put into another smaller tank, refugy, ect.

JC_UF_ITK,
I agree with acrodave most of the time fuzzy = bad. Like he said if the claws come to a sharp point its usually a sign its a predator. I found this little guy in my tank once...

I have since moved him to a tank by himself as he was eating my snails at night. The little red beady eyes should have tipped me off he was not good for my tank...lol. If you can catch him/her and dont want to kill it put it in your fuge if you have one or move it to its own tank.

It does have pointy claws and I don't have a fuge so it'll probably take a ride on the porcelain roller coaster unless the LFS wants it back.

You could always check with your local clubs to see if anyone with a FOWLR wants it as opposed to flushing. Or, if you're feeling particularly vindictive you could see if anyone with big puffers or triggers would want it for meal-time!

Most crabs are problematic, fuzzy or not. If the animal has four pairs of walking legs, it's likely a true crab, and I'd remove it. Three pairs of walking legs indicates it's likely a porcelain crab (or a damaged true crab :)), and it might be safe.

even if it eats algae, when algae is in low supply they will begin to eat coral rather than face starvation.i had a emerald crab eat the polyps off of a digitata frag.
