I'm upgrading my lights and don't really know all the pro's and con's about single vs dual end halides. I know the dual end bulds put out more UV and must be shielded while the single end don't. Does the shielding affect light penetration?

Are there other issues which make one a much better choice than the other.

Are you going to have 250 or 400? Bulb selection for SE is better on the 400 and DE is better on the 250. Spectrum is probably the most important consideration. Have you decided on what bulb?

Honestly, unless your going to go with the Phoenix 14k DE bulb, I would just go with SE. Most SE bulbs put out more light compared to the DE counterpart after they are shielded. With the reflectors avalable for SE bulbs these days, they are a better option IMHO in most situations. Where DE are better is the pendants are smaller so they can fit inside smaller canopys much easier, and cleaning the glass is also easier than cleaning the reflector.

I'm going to 250's. My system is a 125 AGA (6' long) and I currently have an outer orbit with 3 150's. I want to go to 3 pendants with Lumenarc reflectors and 250 bulbs. I think 400's would overwelm my chiller.

I think I said that wrong. I want to go to 3 Lumenarc 3 Mini reflectors or the Lumenarc 3 mini Steath (DE) reflectors. Haven't decided on the bulb brand but seriously considering the XM 10k or 15k bulbs.

single ended put out more par. Just look at SanJays results, the same bulbs (AB bulbs, 250W)SE=130 PPFD vs DE=104 PPFD
