I recently set up a phosban reactor on my 29ga reef. The instructions that came with the reactor said that the media shouldnt churn as it will cause grinding.. so the media should be settled on the bottom?? I was under the impression that the media should be in suspension.. how does everyone run their phosban reactor?? (I'm using phosban GFO media)

we ran around 100gph through ours just enough for the surface of the phosban to move a bit

it depends how much media you have in your chamber. i use the mini-jet 404 and mine is around 20-25gph. just the surface has slight movement.

You want it so that it looks like its boiling. So just the top layer is moving.

GFO is fragile and should be kept from tumbling into dust. Here are some ways to do this:

(1) Use Warner Marine PHOSaR HC media which is about 50% denser and sturdier.

(2) Tune the water flow so the surface of the GFO gently "boils" instead of flying up into the water flow.

(3) Place a sponge pad on top of the GFO.

(4) Sandwich a layer of GFO between two layers of granular activated carbon (GAC). The GAC is sturdier than GFO.

(5) Mix a large portion of GAC media with a smaller portion of GFO media.

I use methods (1) and (2).

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I think I have the flow pretty well dialed in now :)
