For a 55gal tank
Which skimmer would you choose on a budget and why?

other would include such models as red sea prizm or euro-reef.
please explain why and keep in mind that this is on a budget.
Must be a HOB model

Other, the octopus is much better budget wise than any other skimmer out there. You could get an octo110 or 150 for cheap and both would be fine for a 55g

I would not go with the coralife, I have one now the 220 and i hate it. IT skims real good for a couple of day's, then I have to clean the collection cup and start over until the next two day's. And then there's the airline it plug's up and you get no skimming of the unit, must clean it on a reaguler basis. Mine is a pain in the !!!!!!!!!! well I think you get my point.

I recommend a Typhoon! I have one on my 55, and it does a great job!

I say SeaClone 100. Rated for a 100, and hangs on. JD

the typhoon would be a good choice if you had to have hob
if you have a sump the octopus nw110 or nw150 would be better
another cheap option (sump wise) is an odyssea ps160 excellent for the price and a via-qua sk200 (if you can get one cheap) is good too.

I just purchased an Ocotpus NW150 for $125 and am very impressed with it. I have a CSS65 (junk) on my 40B now and am replacing it with the NW150.

I had no issues whatsoever with my coralife. It actually worked pretty well on my tank, it just takes tweaking to get the needle-wheel adjusted correctly.

I would say to go with the Octopus', however, they are all in-sump models as far as I know.

HOB only. not interested in a in-sump model since it will be located in my living room and i have no place to hide a sump. Plus im not too sure how to go about making a DIY sump set-up

The coralife is total garbage, the Remora aint much either. On a budget (like most of us) Get an Octopus.

There's not much good news oh hot skimmers out there. For a 55g you have a few options. The typhoon and multi are your best hot skimmer at a decent price, typhoon being less than half. 72 vs 200. The hot deltec's are hit or miss but are priced rediculously around 500. There's a new bermuda out there thats around 225bux, but not sure if its going to be good or bad. I would suggest getting a tunze like said before and running it in tank. Or your only other option i see is having a recirc plumbed behind your tank on a shelf.....which would be your best option. But not many do that.
