Are trumpet coral and candycane coral the same thing?

Yes. Which is why the Latin binomial (AKA scientific name) is better to use. Esp. on an international site like RC.
This coral is Caulastrea.

Candy cane and trumpet are infact not the same species, they are very closly realted thoughr

The two terms are often used pretty indiscriminately. If it matters, use the latin species name. I don't know that it matters much to an aquarist (their care is identical)
