Thanks to all at Euro-Reef for the great booth and giveaways at MACNA XIX!

The new nano skimmer on display looked very nice and I would like to know if it is suitable for an Oceanic Biocube 8 and when it would be available. Any info would be much apreciated!

Thanks!

What are the specs on the Nano Skimmer (max tank sixe - water volume)?

Here is a pic of my 12g JBJ NanoCube DX that I have next to my couch at home.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/156767front1.JPG

Here is a pic of the skimmer located in the first chamber of three in the back of the NC. The middle chamber has been made into a fuge. Also note that I have replaced the 160g Maxi-Jet return pump with a Maxi-Mini and have it turned all the way down to 20gph for maximum efficiency of the filtration system. Additional water movement is provided by a Korillia 1 (400gph) that has been somewhat disassembled and mounted into a custom rock mount that I made. Note the skim in the cup.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/156767Intank.JPG

Here is a pic of the skimmer with the lid off showing some major bubble action coming up to the top of the neck. Also you can see that the cup needs to be emptied. The cup is usually emptied every 24 hours and cleaned every week.

Hahn: No it is actually quite nice. I tried a few other skimmers, and even one that was pretty expensive for what it was, and this thing absolutely CRANKS! I am a big fan to say the least.

Besl: We do not have an official release date. However we would like to release them if possible in Nov.

the skimmate pics in the first collection cup looks very clear to me, was it just starting to break in? microbubbles look great, not as good as the mce300 but still great for a nano skimmer!

Ezy: It was running in just strait salt water, and it had over flowed because we were adjusting it. The pics were more intended to show bubble mass I believe....but still. I will post some skimmate pics tonight when I empty mine out.

I don't think that would be a fair comparison considering what the price difference is......$79 for the ER and $300 for the deltec. I'm sure if they where looking to make something in that price it would be that much better. The small bubbles and the large amount of them tells me that its going kick some serious nano *ss. Great job on this guys.

Here is the skim over 24 hours. The first picture shows the skim as it is when I empty the cup. The second one shows the skim after it has been sitting for 30 min. Notice that that the suspended particles have made a thick layer on the bottom. By the way this a larger shot glass than normal. I wish you guys could smell this stuff through your computer screens!

The one thing I see in this pic is it looks like the tank mount/clamp to hold the skimmer to the tank looks small and the skimmer is just sitting on the lip... Please make the take mount big enough. For us that do nanos that seems to be the biggest problem. I do not know how many nano products I have bought that will not fit over the lip of my tank.

Anything new on these? What tank sizes could this skimmer support?

reefman13
11/08/2007, 03:32 PM
I think it goes something like this:

Light Bio-load: 10-40 gallons
Medium Bio-load: 10-30 gallons
Heavy Bio-load: 10-25 gallons

That is from what I remember hearing from one of the guys over at Euro-Reef, so that is how they have rated them, but remember, most websites (DFS, PA, and MD) all say that the skimmer ratings are far below their potential. So any nano tank I think it would do a great job on, if it is the traditional ER quality:)

Hello Reef Central forum users:

First of all, I have some good news. For those of you who have been waiting patiently, the BETA Nano skimmers arrived today. We will be inspecting them and making any modifications necessary before they are shipped out to the BETA test candidates. Although no one has been officially notified at this time for testing, we will be contacting applicants this week to inform them that they have been chosen and get NDA’s signed and returned. We will be posting pictures of the new Nano shortly. 

On a side note, it has been brought to our attention that there are some supposed "E-R nano skimmers" for sale on the web. One on this forum that was named as a E-R skimmer, and also one via an Internet retailer. The skimmer for sale on this forum is also a prototype skimmer but of unknown origin. In the case of the Internet retailer, the units being offered are also prototypes that a distributor purchased as samples and is selling off having chosen not to sell the product.

It should also be noted that these products are not being marketed as Euro-Reef, Inc products. They look very similar to the prototypes that we have been showing at recent trade shows, but they do not have the features that would make them perform up to Euro-Reef, Inc standards. You will all see that shortly!! ;)

We have been reworking the design. We were not happy with what we had last year and decided to go back to the DB. We will not offer BETA's until we have working products that satisfy our performance requirements. Rest assured, we are working VERY hard to finish the designs and when they are ready, we will announce the BETA program opening in our company forum.

I have found that nano skimmers like that really benefit from getting a pump with an air to water ratio that favors the air more, like 2:1. The additional turbulence that a higher water flow pump causes disrupts much of the skimmer's potential considering its so short/small. Or, a small bubble plate of some sort...

euroreef
04/13/2008, 03:08 PM
That's one of the issues we're working on. A couple of the complications with achieving that kind of ratio with any MD pump is the dissipation of heat and the wear on the rotor assembly. 99.9% of water pumps made don't handle air in the mix so well, at least not at high air to water ratios.

It's challenging and fun!! :) That's why we do this...

-Jeff

hahnmeister
04/13/2008, 04:03 PM
Yes, hence the 'anti-lime' loop on the Red Dragons. The thing is, if you enlarge the pump volutes even more (custom enlarged volute) to make the pumps even more of a flow bias, you also end up with a air/water ratio approaching 1:1, and even though you have alot of air, you keep most of the water flow as well so the cooling isnt so bad. As a consequence of keeping the water flow, you keep the pump's efficiency up (power factor). The higher the power factor, the less heat the pump will put out.

This assumes you start with a halfway decent pump in the first place. Lagunas, eheims, etc... usually preserve their efficiency very well because they have high power factors in the first place (about 0.8), but many cheaper pumps like the chinese made ones have crappy power factors to start with (0.5 and lower), so they run much hotter. So you gotta start with a cool running pump. The best I have come up with is the Aquaclear 70... does up to 500lph with a custom volute and threadwheel... needlewheel would most likely take it down to 300lph... but it does this for about 12 watts with a power factor around 0.6... so it keeps prett cool. Most other small pumps like this, esp w/o a custom volute, tend to have power factors in the 0.3 range with higher RMS wattages, so they really heat up bad.

The other option for small skimmer pumps is a DC motor. I am working on one with ATB for this very reason... that way one small DC pump (similar to a sicce psk in size) can be used for anything from 300lph to 2000lph. DC pumps dont have all those heat buildup problems, even at 6500rpm.

We should have a small run of one of the models ready to go in 2-3 weeks. We are just finishing the design of the tool for the machining of the Venturi. I know there are a number of folks that have applied to be BETA customers and they will be shipped first. We will likely have about 20-30 units in the first batch.

Did you watch the video? I was hoping to be able to imbed it here, but don't know if it's possible or not. If I can I will asap :)

Euroreef,
does this mean that if we were contacted regarding a beta we should hopefully be getting ours first? My bf was picked and we haven't heard anything in a long time. This skimmer was supposed to go into our solana....and are very excited to hear they are about ready to be released.

I am putting the idea of buying a tunze nano skimmer on the back bunner until this skimmer comes out. I hope it skims like crazy with no microbubbles and I will be a happy camper. Oh and please make one to fit into the back of a solana aquarium system. ;)

I like Euro Reef. What will the price of that nano skimmer be? It looks great in that video but the guy sounds "incredibly" like a dork.

Only from Euro-Reef Nano Systems for now. The will be available through LFS's in the near future, but for now, just online through the ERNS site. It should be ready to launch later this week. :)

I am very interested in getting one of these for my new 29 gallon AGA quarantine tank . Would this skimmer work in a regular glass aquarium? It looks perfect for what I need. I have tried to find more information about the units but have had no luck. Where can I find some detailed information on these units?

Thanks, Jim
