I'd rather have 18" wide by 12" high, that sounds like a poor design, JMO

it is a poor design but its a tank and it holds water

huh how is a standard 29g a poor design? I think a tank that has no height is a poor design

tank with less height requires less intense lighting. tall isnt really better. fish dont really prefer to swim up and down anyhow. thats why a 40 breeder is so popular for reef tanks its only 16" high but like 18" deep (front to back) and 36" long. Its my favorite small tank for a reef.

Two month old 29g standard. Purchased at Wal-Mart 5 yers ago. Started off as a freshwater and now salt. Not many inhabitants yet, blenny, sand sifter, gbta and tomato, snails and hermies. I just couldnt let it sit in shed collecting spiders and other crap. Im having fun with it and thats what counts. Who really cares if its a standard, it holds water. IMHO tall hexagon tanks are a waste. Soon to upgrade to something bigger but for now this is what I got.

In most cases, vertical space, is wasted space.

I agree with the post near the top, id MUCH rather have a longer, wider tank, then a deep tank. If I were to use a something that tall, id have a 4-6" DSB and id try and cover it all around the tank.

I mean, cover it from the outside, visually, i don't want to see DSB haha.

This is my 29. I have T-5 lighting, a HOB skimmer/filter, and run an Aquajr controller. It's basically an SPS with a Zoa Garden.

While I agree I'd love to have a deeper 29, I think visually the ratio of height to width on this tank is perfect. Kinda like a HDTV screen. Its all about the visuals after all.

Here's my 29 from about 4 months ago:
