sd I'm planning my new project 100x36x27 and would like to used one brand of equipment. I'm a big geo fan but recently he stopped making skimmers thus I'm leaning towards MRC skimmer/reactor/kalk, thay may very well all fit under my stand and provide me with the quality and craftmanship I'm used to.

I have the MRC-2 skimmer and a 12" extension with WC-2 waste collector that works great, very well built. I also have the kalk reactor that works well. I like the solid construction of their products, Andy also has a very good reputation for supporting the products. I plan on getting the CR-2 calc reactor and having MRC build my tank when I upgrade. If you get one of their skimmers make sure you get the right pump, I changed from the Mag-24 to a Sequence Marlin (also used as return with a manifold) and the performance jumped quite a bit.

I have an MRC FM-415 reactor with an Eheim 1046 pump. I keep granular activated carbon (GAC) and granular ferric oxide in it.

The service from MRC is great. I returned my reactor for servicing and the turnaround was very fast. I think MRC worked on it over a weekend so I could get it back quickly. I wrote a positive review of the FM-415 in Reef Central.

If you are trying to get all of your equipment from one vendor, you might consider Schuran. I like the Schuran Multi-Filter 1000 (www.customaquatic.com) because the pump is internal and does not dangle from the reactor on a piece of tubing. I respect Schuran's protein skimmers because that company also produces freshwater skimmers. Skimming is much more difficult in freshwater than seawater.

Nevertheless, it will be hard to beat the personalized and responsive service provided by My Reef Creations.

I have been running the MR6 calcium reactor for over 3 years and like it. Any questions I had during set-up Andy was very helpful.

I have the MR-4 dual beckett run by the Barracuda and it is a powerhouse. I live in california so I switched to something more energy efficient, since my electrical here is too much. If interested let me know. It has an extra 12 inch riser, 1.5 gallon waste collector and pump included.

I also have the dual CR-6 with spray bar. Its working well, no problems and steady ALk. In fact, its working so well and my pH is not dropping as much as I thought that I have the new style Nilsen reactor with 2 tiimers available as well. I guess I was thinking alot like you are.

all andy's stuff is really well built and well conceived. i've got an MR-1 skimmer, only wish i'd gotten an MR-2. CR5 calcium reactor, excellent product. and their reef sump, only wish i'd oversized that as well. he's also really good about pricing out pumps etc in package deals, the only disappointment i've had at all with thousands of dollars sent their way was the regulator in the calcium reactor package. that's unbelievably minor compared to the overall quality of my experience with them.

one caveat: have lots of space available, i.e. fish room. i don't think they make anything really intended for use in a cabinet. everything's built like a tank.

I have a MR1 that I ran for about a year. Great product, and excelent customer service even though I did not buy it new. I had sent a email to Andy on Easter weekend, and I got my first response on easter sunday. Now thats service. But I have recently changed to Aqua-C EV1000. The reason for was the MR-1 was under sized and I needed to upgrade and could not pass up on the Aqua-C.

Now fo the complaints on the MRC. The Becekt injecor would need to be cleaned too often. Maybe it was my feeding style? Second was it seem to always need to be adjusted almost daily, mainly after feedings.

Other than that build quality was top notch. And I would suggest going with quick release for the collection cup, well worth the $45.00 IMHO. I hope this helps, Tim

Thx tim- one of the main deterrents for this product is the constant tweaking.
Looking for some more opinions thx

If you can plan ahead and install some 100 micron filter bags before the skimmer you should never have a problem. Thats what a past TOTM winner did. This will also cut down micro bubbles and keep your water polished. This months TOTM changes them every 5 to 7 days.

Are you planning on getting the Nilsen? I did have problems with the old style and would not recommend them. New ones, I do not know. Their skimmers are well built as are their reactors.

I use a stainer on the pump intake. Hardly ever need to clean my becketts any more.

I never tweak my skimmer. I'm not sure what's going on in your tank that you would need to.

Are you talking about a strainer like they use for ponds or what exactly. I'd be very interested. Since mine likes to catch small snails in the becketts.

I use the standard 1" strainer like this:
http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~idProduct~FT8355.html

Very small snails get through. Usually they are small enough to get through the beckett too.

Edit to my previous post....I can imagine if your becketts are constantly getting clogged, that will directly affect the skimmer, requiring constant tweaking, if not cleaned.

Yeah I am not sure either. I really liked the skimmer except for these small things. But I needed a upgrade anyways and I found a great Local used Aqua-C that I could not pass up. The jury is still out on the Aqua-C since it just went in yesterday.

My becketts do get clogged even using a strainer, though it's mostly seems to be salt or calcium deposits.....

Gasman, I hope you're not dumping the ETSS?!?
